Impact Labelling | Limerick | Low Migration Inks for Food safety

At Impact Labelling, we’re not just printing labels; we’re ensuring the safety and integrity of products. In an industry where details matter, we’ve taken a pioneering step in Ireland by adopting Low Migration Inks. Let’s take a look what this means for our clients and the end consumers.

What is Ink Migration?

Ink migration refers to the unintentional transfer of substances from packaging inks into products, such as food or even pharmaceuticals. This can lead to contamination, altering taste, odour, or potentially causing health risks. Understanding ink migration is crucial for ensuring product safety.

What is an Ink Migration Test?

An ink migration test assesses the safety of packaging by measuring the extent to which inks transfer from packaging materials to the product. These tests are essential for complying with global safety standards, ensuring that any migration stays within legally permissible limits.

What are Low Migration Inks?

Low migration inks are specially formulated to minimise the risk of ink migration. They contain high molecular weight raw materials that resist bleeding or transferring, thereby protecting the product within. These inks are essential for maintaining the purity and safety of packaged goods.

Who uses Low Migration Inks in Ireland?

In Ireland, the usage of low migration inks is still gaining ground, and is not yet regulation. However, at Impact Labelling, we’re proud to be at the forefront of the movement to adopt them, ensuring that all our printed materials, especially for food and pharmaceutical packaging, utilise these safer inks. As  awareness grows, the regulation of inks is something that will likely come in the future, but we’re proud to say that we’re ready for that day.

The Benefits of Using Low Migration Inks:

  • Enhanced Product Safety: Low migration inks protect consumers from potential contaminants.
  • Market Responsiveness: As regulations evolve, using low migration inks positions brands as responsible and consumer-conscious.
  • Impact Labelling’s Dedication to Safe Printing: Since 2015, we’ve committed to using low migration inks, reflecting our dedication to customer safety and product quality. Our use of Low Migration Inks across the board in our TruePress Jet 350UV+LM Digital Press and all Flexographic Presses are testimony to this commitment.

Challenges and Innovations in Low Migration Ink Usage:

Transitioning to low migration inks involves overcoming challenges like investing in compatible printing presses, a 6-month decontamination period and adhering to strict manufacturing processes. Our inks are sourced from certified suppliers such as Flint Inks. However, the investment signifies our unwavering commitment to delivering the safest products to our customers.

  • We’re one of the only label manufacturers in Ireland dedicated to the sole use of low migration inks in our Flexographics presses. We made the switch to low migration inks in 2015 when we bought a Mark Andy P5 Press.
  • While being approximately 15% more expensive than standard inks we feel that it is a worthwhile investment to give the best & safest product possible to our customers.
  • Our Trupress Screen digital press is the only UV inkjet digital press in Ireland using Low migration inks, which are Swiss ordinance, Nestle & EuPia certified for food & pharma safe packaging.
